ABSTRACT

Methods: The data was collected through a literature review from 2010 to 2023, in Portuguese, using the SciELO, LILACS, USP and Google Scholar databases.
Results: drugs of abuse can cause consequences for the mother and the newborn, which can be irreversible in the pre- and post-natal period. Like alcohol, FAS stands out as the most serious pathology. Marijuana is a pioneer in causing microcephaly. When the fetus is exposed to cocaine, it causes fetal malnutrition, rickets and cognitive impairment, as well as sudden death, while crack consumption by pregnant women can develop fetal tachycardia and intrauterine cerebral vascular infarction.
Conclusions: the harm caused by drugs of abuse was listed in terms of risks and effects caused by consumption during pregnancy, for the pregnant woman, the fetus and the newborn.
Keywords: Drugs of abuse. Complications in pregnancy. Consequences for pregnant women.
